DRAGONFRUIT

Once upon a time Little Janz from grade 9 heard of the magical fruit of the Dragons.
She googled the picture and was instantly drawn to its peculiar appearance and strange neon pink colour.

One Saturday afternoon, she and her dad went to Chinatown and lo and behold,
on the longest table in the front of the store....
DRAGONFRUIT!
The store had the biggest and brightest football-sized dragonfruit she'd ever seen. Little Janz asked her Daddy Yong if they could buy it and being the kind daddy he is, he said yes.

The evil cashier rang up the dragonfruit and after barking a maniacal laugh,
he declared the total to be $10, a hefty price for a fruit the size of two of Little Janz's fists.

Looking at her daughter's expectant face expression, Daddy Yong reluctantly doled out the money and paid the cashier.

On the ride back from Chinatown, Daddy Yong drove in silence and thought about all of the family's expenses and how he didn't make much money in the last few months and regretted buying that fruit. His regrets and worries manifested in a very surprising way and he begun to yell at his poor daughter for making him buy it.

With a crying daughter in tow, he returned to the store. Little Janz sat in the car as Daddy Yong bargained with the evil cashier, in the hopes of getting his hard earned money back. The stony-faced cashier refused to return his money.

The two sat in the car silently as they returned home, the neon fruit glowing a little too cheerfully in the backseat.

Still upset about the pink fruit, Daddy Yong left Little Janz alone upstairs to prepare the dragonfruit herself. Little Janz cut the dragonfruit, revealing a surprisingly white flesh that was sprinkled with black seeds. She tasted its juicy flesh. Her very first bite of the exotic fruit. It was like a vanilla ice cream paradise! Chilled to perfection, it had the crunchy texture of kiwi seeds, its tartness replaced with sweetness.

She carried a plateful of the delicious fruit down to Daddy Yong who tasted it. A smile crept onto his face as he joyously ate and floated off into the vanilla ice cream paradise.

And so, the dragonfruit that caused strife between Little Janz and Daddy Yong returned the harmony between them.

THE END.

Strangers?

Yesterday, I talked to a new member from my self defense class. His name's Sylvain and he's from France and he came to Vancouver because of the Olympics. He's middle aged - looks about 40ish - and is kinda balding. Anyway, after the class, he asked if I had facebook and I told him I didn't use it anymore, and then he asked me for my number and said I could call him if I wanted to party sometime. I reluctantly gave him my number, honestly feeling really guarded.

Then today when I was a block away from home, a construction worker started talking to me. The first thing he said was "Don't you have anyone to call?" which confused me. Apparently he'd seen the cell phone in my hand next to my leg instead of next to my ear. Then he talked about my hair, and by that time, I was walking past him. I felt so uncomfortable talking to him, a total stranger. Plus, he was also middle aged. He asked me if I was going home, if I had just finished school, and what grade I was in.

Oh, and also a random fact: I look younger than I actually am, being asian. People usually mistake me as around 16, depending on where I am.

So, my question is what do you think about me being weirded out by these two events? Or do you find it totally fine and normal for a middle aged guy on the streets to start up a conversation with someone who looks as young as I do? Or for a middle aged person to just ask for a younger girl's number? They weren't being creepy or anything - if they were my age, I wouldn't have considered it strange, but being so much older, I find it odd.
